It’s where Canadian soldiers bled on D-Day June 6, 1944.
Eighteen-thousand Canadians took part in the allied landing on the beaches of Normandy 70 years ago today.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper joined 99 vets to commemorate the greatest seaborne invasion in history.
Harper told all those gathered Canadians can take enormous pride in the fact their troops played such a ”pivotal role in ensuring the success of the D-Day landings”.
And he specifically told the veterans they had travelled a long way to be close to fallen comrades once more and what they did will never be forgotten.
The first day of the allied invasion claimed 359 Canadian soldiers and by the time the campaign was over 5,000 had been lost.
